Jack Powers, VP of sales at Sun Chemical, is virtually the definition of a people person. He has the special ability to forge relationships with all of the people he works with, from colleagues to customers.
Powers joined Sun Chemical in 1976 as a sales representative in the Pigments Division, rising to Eastern regional sales manager and building relationships with Superior Printing Ink, Penn Color, Three Dimensional and F &F, to name a few ink companies.
Sun Chemical recognized his talents, and brought him over to the Ink Division, where he works closely with Vertis, Brown Printing and Cenveo, among others. Today, he covers all the end users of Sun Chemical for the paint, plastics and ink industries., and he mentors many within the organization and continues to be highly regarded by all his peers.
“I am extremely honored to receive this prestigious award,” Powers said. “To receive this award and be recognized by the industry and my peers is truly a humbling experience. Thank you to all that selected me for this award.”
Powers credits many of his colleagues with influencing his career, including Ed Barr and Russ Schwartz, and Schwartz said the feeling is mutual.
“Jack values technology and understands how it contributes to the establishment of strong customer relationships, and has done so for decades before innovation became almost what can be considered an industry mantra,” said Schwartz, Sun Chemical’s chief technology officer. “Jack is a student of human behavior who forms enduring friendships with his customers and colleagues. He is an incredibly committed advocate for his customers and effectively leverages the organization to respond quickly to their requests. But more importantly, working with Jack can be great fun, and not many things matter more than that when one reflects on a career spanning four decades.”
Outside of work, Powers and his wife Carol have two daughters, who both graduated from Lehigh University and currently work on Wall Street. He also enjoys golf and travel.
“I like playing golf on some of the greatest courses this country has to offer,” he said. “I also enjoy traveling.”
Powers said that helping his customers is one of the great rewards of his career.
“I have had many highlights, but securing a large publication account in the late 1980s was one of the real highlights because we were able to deliver value on every level to the customer,” Powers recalled.
