Sun Chemical will consolidate resources and enhance service for its customers through the consolidation of its manufacturing operations for its packaging inks in North America.
Sun Chemical will close the production lines in its Charlotte, NC manufacturing facility toward the fourth quarter of 2010. A majority of the manufacturing in that plant will move to its Kankakee, IL facility, one of the most modern manufacturing plants in North America, with some of the most up-to-date equipment used to enhance the product consistency and quality of Sun Chemical’s inks.
Additionally, production of tobacco inks and coatings currently manufactured in the Charlotte plant will be consolidated at Sun Chemical’s Richmond plant. A packaging application technical laboratory currently located at the C
“Closing the production lines in the Charlotte manufacturing plant was a difficult decision,” said John Gowlett, vice president, global operations, Sun Chemical. “We have a good team in Charlotte, but current marketplace realities have forced us to consolidate our production and operate more efficiently. As well as improving our cost and efficiency, this move will allow us to meet the needs of our customers for an ever increasing level of quality and consistency matching the best products available anywhere in the global marketplace today.”
This restructuring will affect approximately 75 jobs at Sun Chemical’s Charlotte plant. For union employees affected by this move, Sun Chemical will schedule effects bargaining. Employees will be eligible for COBRA as mandated by law, and severance benefits will be offered.
Acquired by Sun Chemical in 1991, the Charlotte facility was not originally built as an ink manufacturing plant, but instead was adapted from other uses. As a result, the existing infrastructure and compromised layouts created a material and workflow maze which prevents ink production from being optimized to world class standards. Consolidation of manufacturing in Kankakee will eliminate unnecessary costs due to inefficiencies like duplicate inventories, blending and packing equipment.
Sun Chemical operates more than 250 facilities around the world.
