Comments: 2019 was a major year for DuPont, as the company was reformed after the 2017 merger with Dow created DowDuPont. Dow, which was Material Sciences, separated off April 1, 2019, while Corteva, the Agriculture division, was spun off on June 1, 2019.
“The new DuPont launches today with leading market positions in four core markets and strong geographic, customer and end-market diversification,” said Ed Breen, executive chairman and CEO of DuPont.
Headquartered in Wilmington, DE, DuPont is in more than 70 countries. The company has approximately 170 manufacturing sites, more than 10 global R&D centers and 10 global innovation centers.
For fiscal year 2019, DuPont’s net sales were $21.5 billion, down 5% compared to 2018. The company noted that on an organic basis, net sales were down 2% with a 2% higher price being more than offset by 4% lower volume, primarily from the macro conditions in automotive and electronics end markets. Electronics & Imaging net sales of $3.6 billion and pro forma operating EBITDA of $1.1 billion were down 2% and 5%, respectively, from 2018.
DuPont develops a wide range of products for a vast range of industries, and has a sizable position in an array of technologically-advanced inks. Its portfolio includes inkjet inks for OEM printers and textiles and conductive inks and pastes for flexible and printed electronics, photovoltaics and displays.
Water-based inkjet inks have long been a staple for DuPont Advanced Printing, which features Artistri pigment- and dye-based digital inks for textiles; inkjet inks for OEM printers in the small office/home office market; and conductive inks and pastes for flexible and printed electronics. At Printing United in October 2020, DuPont Advanced Printing highlighted its new DuPont Artistri P2700 pigment ink designed for roll-to-roll printing.
DuPont Advanced Printing is looking to branch out into digital printing for packaging.
“The next horizon for us is print on packaging, with two sub-groups, folding cartons and corrugated or print on film,” said Eric Beyeler, global marketing manager, digital printing, Electronics & Imaging for DuPont. “We are already in the corrugated and folding carton markets. We are actively developing private label inks for printing inks for film. We are working on this with an eye on food packaging, which comes with food packaging contact regulations. Many of our inks are being generated with food packaging applications in mind.”
