Environmental and safety regulations have become an increasingly important topic for all businesses, including the printing ink industry. Dan Shevkun, director manufacturing services at Superior Printing Ink, is one of the leaders in this field.
Looking for a job, Shevkun joined the printing ink industry 43 years ago. “In 1974, I needed a job, and found one doing laboratory work for Lewis Roberts in Newark, NJ,” Shevkun noted.
In 1982, Shevkun was hired by Superior Printing Ink. He started out in manufacturing, and moved into data and quality control, where he was key to the company’s earning ISO 9001 certification.
Soon after, Shevkun was brought into Superior Printing Ink’s Safety and Environmental Services team, which he leads, and brings his expertise to NAPIM’s environmental, health and safety committees.
In addition, Shevkun is a founding member of the Metro New York Printing Ink Association, serving as a board member and golf chair for the last 15 years. Not surprisingly, golf is one of his favorite activities outside of work.
“Did you really have to ask,” Shevkun said when asked about his hobbies. “Golf, soccer, wine, and how can I not mention food? I wish exercise was one of them!”
Shevkun looks upon every day as a highlight.
“Every day is a highlight, meeting, working and learning from all, from those in the shop to those in boardroom, confronting new challenges daily,” he said. “It’s never dull.”
As for his important influences, Shevkun pointed to his parents. “It has to be Mom and Dad. I think of them often,” he added.
Shevkun said he is very thankful to receive the Pioneer Award.
“The recognition is very gratifying,” he added. “I have to extend another thank you to those who made it happen. Seeing the plaque on the wall stimulates happy thoughts and makes me smile daily.”
