In recent years, printing ink manufacturers have enjoyed their best results in two markets: packaging and inkjet. The packaging ink market continues to expand, with new technologies such as flexible packaging driving growth. Meanwhile, digital printing is also growing quickly and reaching new markets.
In our May/June 2016 issue, associate editor Catherine Diamond and I take a look at these two segments. In “Packaging Inks,” starting on page 20, Diamond talks with leading packaging ink suppliers, who talk about the latest trends. Low migration inks are a critical topic for converters and brand owners alike, and ink companies are working closely to meet industry needs.
In my report on inkjet inks, which begins on page 24, digital printing ink executives report on some of the growth areas they are seeing, including packaging. Considering how inkjet printing has become a leading technology in many segments in recent years, it is certain that digital printing of personalized and short run packaging will be arriving soon enough; the Share a Coke campaign is proof of this.
This year marks the return of drupa to Messe Dusseldorf in Dusseldorf, Germany. Over the years, the show has transitioned from conventional printing to inkjet, and this year will see even more digital printing.
In my drupa preview, starting on page 42, leading ink manufacturers discuss what they are planning for this year’s show, and inkjet printing will be the focus for many of the ink companies exhibiting at drupa this year.
On the raw material side, our May/June issue features European editor Sean Milmo’s article on the European pigment market, as well as stories on both the resin and additives markets.
There is also a look at the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers (NAPIM) Annual Convention, including a feature on Ault Award honoree Lisa Fine, who has been a member of the Ink World Editorial Advisory Board since the beginnings of our magazine in 1995, as well as the seven Printing Ink Pioneer Award recipients. Congratulations to all!
