For Ink World Magazine's 2014 Salary Survey, which was conducted in early 2014, thousands of participants from around the globe shared information on not just salaries, but their company's management, layoffs and job security, and more. Here, you will see a snapshot of information on respondents' employers and industry demographics.
As you can see below, more than half of survey participants work for an ink manufacturer. Respondents were encouraged to indicate every type of ink manufactured by their employer (hence, the total percentage for that question is greater than 100). Packaging flexo, gravure and sheetfed inks were the most popular by a significant margin. Specialty inks were second most popular, followed by publication inks - including heatset, news and gravure - and inkjet inks. Conductive inks were the least popular as of 2014. Given the industry's steady growth, it will be interesting to see how this changes in upcoming years.
For their part, suppliers indicated that their companies' primarily provide goods categorized as "other;" followed closely in popularity by pigments and resins, and later waxes, distribution and equipment.
A majority of respondents are in a management position, and typically oversee anywhere from five to 20 people. Nearly 15 percent of managers oversee more than 100 people. Happily, the vast majority of these managers - more than 80% - said that they have not had to lay off any employees in the last year.
Interestingly, survey participant age groups varied considerably, with nearly even distribution between ages 35 and 64. Less than one percent of participants are between the ages of 18-23, indicating that fewer people are entering this industry out of college. More than 86% of respondents were male.
