In 1915, a group of ink U.S. printing ink makers decided the time was right to form an association. The first convention of this group, which would eventually become the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers (NAPIM), was held in Atlantic City, NJ.
Now, 100 years later, NAPIM is still going strong. This year’s convention, which will be held March 20-23 at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, Ponte Vedra, FL, will celebrate the first 100 years of NAPIM, as well as the future of the printing ink industry.
Brad Bergey, NAPIM’s executive director, said that the NAPIM Annual Convention is always memorable, but this year’s event is special because it commemorates the 100th year of NAPIM.
“We are very excited about this year’s program, which includes a festive ‘100 Year Celebration’ on Sunday night and the prestigious industry recognition awards on Monday,” said Bergey. “As always, we’ve included ample networking opportunities and cutting-edge business presentations throughout the event.”
There are indeed some strong presentations scheduled for the Conference. Keynote speaker Rocky Bleier, a former Pittsburgh Steeler star, will be giving the keynote presentation on “Be the Best You Can Be.” Comedian Joe Malarkey will headline the opening breakfast. NAPIM’s George Fuchs will discuss safety issues, Nellie Perry of Argus DeWitt will analyze tackifiers, Harry Zervos of IDTechEx will showcase the world of printed electronics and Phil Riebel of Two Sides will cover the topic of printing and sustainability. The State of the Industry talk will go over the ink industry’s numbers for the past year.
There will also be a number of events outside of the meetings. There will be golf and tennis tourneys, a tour of St. Augustine, the NAPIM 100 Year Celebration & Alumni Reunion Beach Party and the Black Tie Ault Award dinner, with the presenting of the prestigious Ault and Pioneer Awards.
In honor of the occasion, NAPIM is inviting many of the leaders who have played a huge role in the ink industry for this exciting event.
“NAPIM’s long and vibrant history is symbolic of a unique and critically important industry that early on recognized the value and importance of creating a joint industry forum which could work to improve and promote the printing ink industry,” said Bergey.

• “Critical State of Tackifier Feed Streams in the Western World” – Nellie Perry, Argus DeWitt
As the western world (North America and Europe) continue to take advantage of cost advantaged shale gas to feed ethylene units, there has been a progressive reduction in feed supply to make the monomers and polymers of interest to the adhesive and ink industry. This reduction has changed the trade flows of key monomers and forced producers to diversify their portfolio to ensure supply. This has created a dynamic of substitution based on affordability of end-use market segments. This presentation puts in perspective the current feed situation in N. America and how changes in Europe cracking slates have affected the market in the last couple of quarters. It also highlights how this has impacted other end-uses that also rely on these key monomers.
• “Conductive Inks and Printed Electronics” - Harry Zervos, IDTechEx Inc
An expert in the flexible and printed electronics market, Zervos will provide an overview of the current and future market trends and technologies for conductive inks, display lighting, printed sensors, substrates and barrier layers etc. Every ink and coating manufacturer will find this a fascinating and insightful presentation.
