Howard Greenwald, who helped guide LANSCO Colors into a force in pigment distribution, died August 9, 2009.
Mr. Greenwald was a 1940 graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He began supplying pigments, fillers and additives to the paint, plastics and ink industry in 1952 as sales manager of Smith Chemical and Color Co. in Brooklyn, NY in 1952. He left Smith in 1965, and became an independent sales representative until partnering with Werner Klugman in 1975 to purchase Landers-Segal Color Co, Inc., (LANSCO Colors), a New York/New Jersey distributor of pigments. Over the next five years, he was joined by his two sons, David and Donald, and Mr. Klugman's daughter Deborah.
From 1975 to 2000 he guided the company into national prominence, growing revenues 50 times. In 1991, he acquired Smith Chemical and, subsequently, numerous other pigment distributors. Today, LANSCO Colors is a force in the distribution of organic and inorganic pigments to the coatings, ink and plastics industries in the U.S. He was a member of the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology’s (FSCT) New York Chapter.
“Consummate businessman that he was, I find it gratifying that the most oft repeated comment we hear from the industry as well as his friends is, 'He was a gentleman,’” said Donald Greenwald, current CEO and president of LANSCO Colors.
