Superior Printing Ink., Co., the largest supplier of sheetfed, lithographic inks in North America, celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. Founded in 1918, the company rapidly became known for accurate color matching and “get-it-there-no-matter-what” delivery. Today, Superior continues to live up to its motto, “Modern Technology/Old Fashioned Service,” with the same blend of innovative technology and steadfast attention to customers that has successfully assisted the printing and graphics communication industries through decades of dramatic change and into the 21st century.
The latest in a long line of product innovations include the company’s recently re-launched portfolio of UV sheetfed inks (Super-Cure, Inter-Cure and Plastik-Cure), which are now recognized as the industry-leading products for energy curable performance and quality. To address the growing industry need for greener printing, the company introduced Evolocity, a breakthrough in ultra-low VOC sheetfed technology. Evolocity combines unrivaled press efficiencies with significant environmental advantages. Superior’s latest product launch, Biolocity, sets a new industry benchmark for green formulation technology, offering superb lithographic performance, extremely fast setting, low VOCs (2 percent), and a high percentage of bio-derived raw material content.
Four generations after its founding, Superior remains a family-owned and operated American business. Its continuity of ownership and management has been a key element in the company’s success, providing a solid foundation on which the company continues to build.
Superior moved its corporate headquarters from New York City to Teterboro, NJ, in 2006. The move enabled Superior to create a state-of-the-art research and development center, color lab, and manufacturing plant. The new headquarters also provides a base for enhanced product development and support to customers both in the tristate area and nationwide.
The move to Teterboro was preceded by Superior’s opening of its automated varnish manufacturing plant in Hamden, CT, in 2005. An addition to the company’s ISO 9001:2000 certified central manufacturing facility, the new varnish plant has allowed Superior to substantially increase its level of automation, and thus quality and efficiency, in the manufacture of lithographic printing ink, including specialty inks. As a result, the central manufacturing facility, which serves more than 20 full-service manufacturing branches around the country, is now the most advanced sheetfed ink production facility in North America.
Superior maintains an adjacent Hamden facility which encompasses an upgraded warehouse/distribution center, a modern national customer service center, and an automated specials manufacturing facility.
In addition to its manufacturing branches, Superior maintains more than two dozen in-plant customer service locations nationwide. The company also operates a second manufacturing facility in Marlboro, MA, and two wholly-owned subsidiaries, Spinks Ink Company and Gotham Ink Corporation, dedicated to the manufacture of small press inks and flexographic and gravure inks respectively.
According to Jeffrey Simons, chairman, CEO and president, “Superior has consistently demonstrated an ability to adapt to the changing needs of the marketplace and develop new and innovative technologies to assist our customers. We recognize the challenging environment our customers operate in and above all else, value the contribution they have made to our success over the last ninety years. Superior is well positioned as we close in on one hundred years in operation and look forward to serving our customers of yesterday, today, and tomorrow with leading edge products and services.”
