Cabot has committed to build a new fumed silica plant in Carrollton, KY. The plant will be adjacent to the existing Dow Corning silicone monomer plant in Carrollton and is an extension of Cabot’s long-term relationship with Dow Corning.
Cabot and Dow Corning have been partners for more than 30 years, with current neighboring operations in Midland, MI and Barry, Wales, UK.
Subject to obtaining the necessary government and regulatory approvals, construction of the plant is expected to begin in late-2017 and be operational by 2020.
The project will allow Cabot to:
• Continue to meet the market demand for its high-performance fumed silica.
• Improve supply and manufacturing efficiencies.
• Realize the environmental and safety benefits of collocation with raw material production.
Fumed silica is an ultra-fine, high-purity particle used as a reinforcing, thickening, abrasive, thixotropic, suspending or anti-caking additive. Fumed silica helps improve the performance of a wide range of products, including adhesives, sealants, cosmetics, batteries, toners, silicone elastomers, coatings and pharmaceuticals.
