Omnova Solutions has announced the signing of a strategic alliance agreement with Daikin Industries to jointly develop and commercialize novel fluorochemical products for surface modification and surfactant applications. The alliance will initially develop new products based on Omnova’s patented PolyFox fluoropolymer technology while leveraging Daikin’s expertise in fluorochemistry and material science.

PolyFox fluoropolymers utilize a fluorinated oxetane platform technology to provide structures that enhance properties that are widely associated with fluorochemicals, such as stain resistance and surface flow, leveling and wetting. Several new products for the industrial coatings, ink and floor polish markets are nearing commercialization.

PolyFox fluoropolymer products have been designed to replace certain PFOS (perfluorooctyl sulfonate) fluorosurfactants that are being withdrawn from the market by 3M Company because of environmental concerns.

“The PolyFox technology is completely different from the PFOS material being withdrawn and we believe it is effective in key applications and environmentally friendly,” said Kevin McMullen, Omnova Solutions’ chairman and CEO. “Through this alliance we intend to develop a wide range of highly effective, environmentally friendly fluorosurfactants and coatings modifiers to provide the performance that the market is seeking.”
