In recent years, packaging has been the fastest growing segment in the printing and ink industry. This is driven by several factors, led by the diversity of products. For example, while a recession may impact discretionary spending, food packaging remains recession-proof, and typically expands when people eat at home.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, packaging held its own, as people had to stay at home to dine, although food packaging for restaurants suffered as a result. Meanwhile, other packaging categories flourished, such as DIY and entertainment.
Sustainability is the key trend now, followed by recyclability and compostability. In “The 2022 Packaging Ink Report,” which begins on page 24, ink industry executives talk about what they are hearing from their customers, and sustainability is at or near the top of the list.
There is a lot of discussion on the Circular Economy and Cradle-to-Cradle manufacturing. To achieve these goals, products must be able to be recycled, reused or composted. In “The 2022 Packaging Ink Report,” leading packaging ink manufacturers discuss the importance of these topics as well as others, ranging from bio-renewable content to deinkability. These are all important topics.
Sustainability also comes up in “The UV Ink Market Continues to Thrive,” which begins on page 30. Here, too, ink industry executives talk about how they are developing energy-curable inks that are deinkable, allowing the inks to float to the surface and be skimmed off. Meanwhile, some energy curable inks are being formulated with more biorenewable content, and require less energy to produce.
To meet the needs of packaging printers and their customers, the brand owners, ink companies are developing sustainable solutions that meet the evolving requirements of their customers and consumers, and are playing a vital role in the Circular Economy.
