Innovation and service are critical to the offset ink market. Printers rely on their ink suppliers to formulate high-quality new products and provide the service
they require.
Kwang Myung Ink Co., Ltd. (KMI) is ideally suited to meet these needs. Founded in 1976, KMI specializes in offset inks, with products ranging from coldset, sheetfed, and heatset inks. The company produces 35,000 tons of ink annually.
“KMI is a South Korean ink manufacturer, based in the port city of Busan,” said Peter Baird, global sales and marketing director. “Established in 1976 by ink chemist Lee Nam Kyu as a specialized company for offset inks, KMI has a state-of-the-art resin and ink manufacturing facility and is one of the most modern producers in the world. With 60% of all its production being exported outside of Korea, to approximately 60 countries, through a network of professional distributor partners, KMI offers high-quality inks for sheetfed, heatset and coldset print applications worldwide.”
KMI has made significant moves recently, adding four key members to its team: Baird; Romain Boulot, global business development director; Richard Wilson, global technical director; and Rodney Balmer, global product development director. Their focus is on business development for KMI in all the major offset markets around the world: commercial sheetfed, folding carton packaging and wide web publication printing. Their aim is to increase KMI market penetration and widen its geographical reach to make KMI a leading global player.
“Thanks to long term partnerships with its customers, KMI has enjoyed the most dynamic growth history of any of its competitors, making it the fastest growing ink company in the world,” Baird noted. “And today KMI is an attractive employment proposition for enthusiastic chemists, business graduates and sales professionals. The newly hired team is a key step to strengthen KMI as a global ink manufacturer.”
In addition to its inks, KMI develops its own resins. Baird said that KMI’s dedication to R&D is a key differentiator for the company.
“KMI has achieved recognition for employing a team of highly skilled research scientists, who, among other accomplishments have developed (i) their own hard resin, which helps them produce extremely stable, high-quality products, (ii) a range of high-quality, eco-friendly inks and (iii) a reputation for craftsmanship, reliability and innovation, from one of the most modern ink factories in the world,” Baird noted.
Baird added that innovation in products and services are both key pillars of KMI’s strategy.
“Leveraging KMI’s offset product quality and consistency expertise, Rodney Balmer will support the global product portfolio development strategy,” Baird noted. “Launching competitive UV and UV LED inks and varnishes are the first key milestone over the next weeks.
“Regarding service, the new staff members have this at the center of their activities, creating seamless interaction with dealers, starting from product recommendation to technical training and print support, which in turn promotes an ‘easy-to-to-do-business-with’ relationship with their customers,” Baird added.
Baird said that the future is bright for KMI.
“Recent months’ business development is very promising as we seek to expand the product portfolio and regional service coverage,” he concluded. “We are looking forward to adding further products to our portfolio to help make our dealer partners around the world even more successful.”
