The Metro New York Printing Ink Association (MNYPIA) honored Dr. Juanita Parris, global director of material science for Sun Chemical, with its 19th Anthony Mauriello Woman of the Year award. Dr. Parris was honored Nov. 3, 2022, at a dinner held in her honor at Il Villagio in Carlstadt, NJ. Dr. Greg Pace served as the emcee.
“I want to sincerely thank the MNYPIA,” Dr. Parris said. “I’m very humbled to join the illustrious people who have received this award. You can see the industry icons who have been recognized, who are very clearly leaders in the field of graphic arts and printing inks.”
Dr. Parris joined the ink industry in 1993 as a scientist in Sun Chemical’s research location in Carlstadt, NJ after receiving her PhD in chemistry from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She has held positions of increasing scope, responsibility and complexity and has led liquid ink, analytical and energy curable R&D.
She spent five years in Sun Chemical’s corporate offices as Director of Procurement. Currently, Dr. Parris is the global director of material science and leads teams responsible for Analytical, Polymer, the Pilot Plant and Dispersion Engineering, the pressroom and Color Science.
Dr. Parris has a long career of service to the ink industry and the graphic arts. She was president of the National Printing Ink Research Institute (NPIRI), the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers’ (NAPIM) technical arm, from 2016-18, and is a member of NAPIM’s technical board. She has also served as a board member of both the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts (TAGA) and RadTech for many years.
Dr. Parris is no stranger to industry accolades, having received NAPIM’s prestigious Printing Ink Pioneer Award and TAGA’s Michael H. Bruno Award.
Attendees spoke of Dr. Parris’ leadership and passion.
“Juanita has a passion for excellence and is a woman of integrity,” Dr. Pace said in presenting Dr. Parris with the award. “We really had a collaboration. We were constantly pushing the envelope, having very energetic discussions, but we always worked it out and never let anything stand in the way of improvement. It’s a please to work with and know her.”
Myron Petruch, Sun Chemical’s president and CEO, spoke about Dr. Parris’ leadership.
“Nobody is more deserving of this award,” Petruch said. “When you think about Sun Chemical’s culture, no one epitomizes it more than Juanita. Everything is always professional but it’s also family.”
“Juanita has really unique qualities – she is curious, courageous and full of conviction,” added Joon Choo of Shamrock Technologies.
Dale Pritchett, MNYPA’s treasurer, said that the reaction to the selection of Dr. Parris to receive this year’s award was overwhelmingly positive.
“What’s really cool is whenever we announce our Man or Woman of the Year, we hear feedback, and the support I heard from every single person has been fantastic,” Pritchett said. “I think the world of you.”
