APRIL Group subsidiary, PT Riau Andalan Paperboard International, a leading manufacturer in the paper and pulp industry located in Indonesia, has initiated the commission of a new IDR 33.4 trillion ($2.3 billion) paperboard manufacturing plant.
This new facility down streams APRIL’s diversification for high value, adding sustainable products to the business. This leverages the company as a fully integrated producer of fiber-based consumer products. Fiber will be supplied from productivity increases from existing plantations and will comply with APRIL’s sustainability policies to meet its APRIL 2030 targets and commitments.
According to AFRY, APRIL’s independent consultants, demand for paperboard in Asia is set in increase by more than 3% per year to 2030 as consumer brands look for more sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging.
The new facility will have the capability to annually produce 1.2 million tons of recyclable and biodegradable paperboard, which will be marketed under the BoardOne and SilverPak brands. PT Riau Andalan contributes to Indonesia’s shift to a lower carbon economy, creating packaging products with bio-based materials. Once operational the new facility will create more than 600 new jobs.
BoardOne will market and distribute a range of premium paperboard products including food service packaging, folding boxboard, art board (C2S) for general packaging, and cup stock. Products are manufactured using high-quality fiber that has been sourced from sustainably managed APRIL plantations. These plantations are certified under the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Sustainable Forest Management standards.
The Company will continue to fine-tune the state-of-the-art facility before full-scale operations to meet global product quality, safety, and health standards, and production sustainability criteria.
