Robert (Bob) Cantu passed away on Sept. 17, 2021, in Charlotte NC after a prolonged bout with cancer. He was 79 years old.
Bob retired from Sun Chemical in or around 2011 after spending his career in the printing ink industry. During his career he provided insight and guidance to packaging customers, particularly paper packaging customers. He was well known and well respected in the corrugated, preprint, multi-wall bag, single service, and specialty paper packaging markets.
In addition, Bob actively participated in numerous industry associations, including TAPPI, AICC, PSSMA and FTA. He published several technical articles and made numerous industry presentations. He worked relentlessly to improve the knowledge and skills of both fellow employees and people in the industry.
For his contribution to the ink industry, in 2001 Bob was a recipient of the Printing Ink Pioneer Award from the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers.
He was recognized by TAPPI in 2007 with the Division Technical Award and Harry J. Bettendorf Prize. Bob was passionate about what he did, but humble in how he did it.
Sadly, his life companion of many decades, Jeannie Fowler, passed away eight days after Bob’s passing, on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, in Charlotte. She also had been battling cancer.
Bob graduated from University of Texas and served in the US Navy. Among Bob’s many interests and accomplishments he was an astronomer, published author, photographer, poet, painter, fly fisherman and classical guitar player. He is survived by his daughter Leslie, many of his friends and Sun Chemical associates.
