Motivated by glass’s earth-friendly benefits, Europeans are choosing glass packaging more than ever according to a study commissioned by Friends of Glass and the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE).
Glass is infinitely recyclable, and Europeans are hearing and acting on the message about glass packaging’s environmental benefits.
The survey reached more than 10,000 people in 13 European countries. The results continue to show glass packaging has a bright future, particularly for shoppers looking to lessen their impact on the environment.
Highlights from the survey include:
- Half of consumers are buying more products in glass packaging compared to three years ago;
- Nine in 10 people said they’d recommend glass to friends and family as the best packaging material, an 11% increase from 2016;
- 46% say they’ve significantly decreased their consumption of plastic to prevent littering;
- 84% say they collect their glass separately for recycling, which is key to getting used glass back into the manufacturing stream efficiently
“It’s heartening to see that not only is glass recycling on the rise across Europe, with a collection rate of 76%, but that the benefits of glass packaging and recycling are strongly resonating with consumers,” said Michael Delle Selve, FEVE’s senior communications manager. “Our ambition is to achieve both a collection rate of 90% by 2030 and full recycling of collected glass packaging – so that people don’t just recycle, but recycle more and better.”
