In The Americas, programs include environmental education, culture, recycling, waste collection, food banks, enhancing community areas, and scholarships for high school studies.
All initiatives developed by Smurfit Kappa seek to improve the quality of life of people living in the communities in which the company operates.
The number of beneficiaries exceeded 450,00 people, per Smurfit Kappa.
In the region, about 4,000 volunteers, among employees, families and friends, worked for 28,898 hours to give back to the communities.
“All companies acquire a commitment with their place of origin, with the cities and countries in which they operate," said Juan Guillermo Castañeda, CEO of Smurfit Kappa The Americas. "Corporate Social Responsibility is one of the most important pillars of the private sector, and it must be one of the biggest engines that move companies because it allows us to be close to communities and work side by side to create better and more sustainable conditions”.
Some of the highest impact programs are, for example, Fighting Hunger, Giving Hope, through which Smurfit Kappa and other partners provide food to more than 300,000 people per month in Los Angeles; the Seeds of Peace Scholarships, which are contributed by Smurfit Kappa employees in Colombia for the most outstanding students of the Technical, Agricultural and Forestry Institutes (ITAF); and the Continuing Education initiative that opens up new opportunities for the Company's employees in Mexico to complete their high school.
Moreover, thanks to the work and effort of Smurfit Kappa´s volunteers and allies in the region, it was possible to collect 44,000 kg (97,003 pounds) of garbage and waste; enhance more than 7,730 square meters (83,205.03 square feet) of facades, and donate hundreds of toys made out of paper and corrugated material throughout The Americas.
