Judith van Vliet, president of the Color Marketing Group (CMG), discussed latest global color trends at the Color Pigments Manufacturers Association (CPMA) members' meeting on June 6 in Covington, KY. In addition to being named president of CMG in 2018, van Vliet is a designer for Clariant ColorWorks where she is responsible for trend forecasting for global and European markets for automotive, textile and carpet, consumer goods and packaging. She also serves as creative leader of ColorFoward, Clariant's annual color forecasting guide for the plastics industry.

CMG is a not-for-profit, international association of color design professionals from a wide range of industries who regularly collaborate to interpret, create, forecast, and select colors that enhance the function, value, and appeal of manufactured goods produced worldwide.

Van Vliet discussed global color trends and various factors considered in color forecasting, including social issues. Based on the latest edition of ColorForward, colors for 2019 are expected to be soft, dark and layered. These trends suggest that in an increasingly complex world, consumers will seek stability and control, as well as show increased appreciation for unique creativity and self-expression. For example, color can be used to increase focus and productivity in your office or to demonstrate individuality and confidence.
