As I was working on my annual Year in Review article for Ink World’s November-December issue, I thought it would be a good time to review the mergers and acquisitions that took place during 2015.
Interestingly, for the ink industry, the largest moves occurred in the growing digital textile arena. Consider these acquisitions:
• Sensient Technologies acquired the assets of Xennia Technology from Royal Ten Cate NV in May 2015.
• Electronics For Imaging, Inc. (EFI) acquired Reggiani Macchine, a water-based inks industrial inkjet print specialist, in July 2015. The new subsidiary will be branded as EFI Reggiani. EFI will now look to bring its ink capabilities into the textile market.
• Dover Corporation acquired JK Group SPA in October 2015. JK Group had three ink subsidiaries: Kiian Digital, J-Teck3 and Sawgrass Industrial; these companies will become part of Dover’s Printing & Identification platform in its Engineered Systems segment.
Now, none of these moves are huge dollar-wise, but they remind me of the consolidation that occurred within the inkjet industry in 2006, when established ink manufacturers INX International Ink Co. and Nazdar decided it would be good to acquire technology-rich inkjet ink companies (Triangle Digital and Lyson, respectively). Today, INX and Nazdar have sizable inkjet product lines. I would imagine that this year’s acquisitions will likely bring similar success to the new parent companies as well.
