Toppan has obtained approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its 2030 target for reduction of scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, one of the Toppan Group Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets for Fiscal 2030, which were established in 2021.

The SBTi promotes the setting of science-based medium-to-long-term targets for GHG emission reduction by companies to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, which established an international framework for mitigating climate change.

Toppan has thus far driven significant reductions in GHG emissions, obtaining SBTi approval for its targets in February 2019.

In an effort to contribute further to achieving the Paris Agreement’s target to “limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels,” in 2021 Toppan established the Toppan Group Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets for Fiscal 2030. The target for reduction of scope 1 and 2 emissions was raised to 32.5% (446 kt-CO2e), an increase of 2.5% over the target set in fiscal 2019, with 2017 (1,373 kt-CO2e) being the base year. The new target has now been approved following the SBTi’s screening process.

Toppan engages in a range of sustainability-related activities, incorporating into its targets the principles of the United Nations Global Compact, the guidelines of the ISO 26000 international standard on the social responsibilities of organizations, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

In January 2021, Toppan devised the Toppan Group Environmental Vision 2050, which lays out long-term approaches to environmental issues to shape a sustainable society in which all forms of life can continue to exist into the future.

“We are very pleased that our revised target has been approved by the SBTi and going forward will contribute to a sustainable society by intensifying our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the Toppan Group,” said Fumie Ikeda, GM of sustainability promotion at Toppan. “Toppan will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure a high level of transparency in disclosure and accelerate ESG initiatives as a leading provider of solutions to social issues enabled by Digital Transformation and Sustainable Transformation.”
