UV curable printing can improve the overall bottom line of a card printer.
October 6, 2015
By: DAVID SAVASTANO
Contributing Editor, Coatings World and Ink World
Sun Chemical’s Sam McReynolds and DIC’s John Schneiderhan will speak about the benefits of UV curable printing for plastic cards during the International Card Manufacturers Association’s (ICMA) North American Workshop. The presentation, to be delivered Oct. 21 at the Renaissance Chicago O’Hare in Rosemont, IL, will discuss how UV curable printing technology can enhance current plastic card print operations. The presentation will show that with moderate capital investments in equipment that can enhance current screen presses, UV curable printing can improve the overall bottom line of a card printer with faster speeds, better outcomes, enhanced security, and additional environmental benefits. Additionally, the presentation will provide strategies and tricks on how to cure inks without distorting the plastic and how to make adjustments based on the power of the UV lamps. McReynolds is a technical manager at Sun Chemical. He brings more than 36 years of experience working in the screen print industry. Schneiderhan is a business development manager at DIC/Sun Chemical and has worked in the plastic card industry since 1993, playing an instrumental role in the development of DIC magnetic tape products. Sun Chemical will have a table top display at the ICMA North American Workshop that will showcase products specifically designed for the plastic card market, including its SunCarte family of screen and offset inks and DIC magnetic tapes. Sun Chemical’s SunCarte family of screen and offset inks, adhesives, and varnishes offer high bond strength and adherence to lamination while also providing consistent color reproduction. The SunCarte product line includes new UV screen inks offering a variety of finishing options for use on plastic cards. SunCarte Opaque White ink was specially designed to work on colored PVC core material, while SunCarte Clear inks can be used to provide pearl, silver, gold and special effect color finishes. SunCarte Clear also offers adhesive properties as the ultra-thin cured ink film minimizes the buildup profile. SunCarte also includes an Offset UV Plastic Card ink series designed exclusively for use on plastic cards. DIC magnetic tapes have been supplied to the financial sector globally for more than 40 years.
