Sun Chemical Corporation announced that Dr. Cynthia Arnold was named chief technology officer. Dr. Arnold assumes the role from Dr. David Hill, to whom she reports. Dr. Hill, a member of Sun Chemical’s senior leadership team, retains his position of senior vice president, technology and operations. He is responsible for leading the company’s growth initiatives through technology and product innovation, as well as overall operational quality and efficiency. “The CTO position is vital for Sun Chemical. As the industry leader, we must also be a leader in technology and innovation,” said Wes Lucas, chairman, president and CEO, Sun Chemical. “As CTO, Cynthia will focus on expanding and enhancing our product line and laying the groundwork to differentiate our offerings from our competitors while creating value for our customers and driving down cost.” She also will lead Sun Chemical’s global technology and quality organizations, as well as identify, establish and drive key commercialization initiatives. “Cynthia will work to develop and deploy world-class commercialization processes within the company and be responsible for generating significant top line growth,” Mr. Lucas said. “She will develop and lead a robust innovation effort and establish key research initiatives for the company.” Additionally, Dr. Arnold will have direct accountability for Sun Chemical’s global R&D and quality organizations and indirect accountability for global technical service organizations. “Cynthia brings a wealth of experience to Sun Chemical and we believe she will be a tremendous asset to the company,” Dr. Hill said. “She has an extensive background in the chemicals industry, working for world-class companies and leading technical teams working on complex projects in coatings, inks, resins and plastics on a global basis.” Dr. Arnold joins Sun Chemical from Eastman Chemical, where she served as vice president, technology. At Eastman, she managed global multidisciplinary R&D and technical service organizations for diverse coatings, adhesives, polymer additives and inks businesses. “Coming to Sun Chemical is an exciting opportunity for me personally and professionally,” Dr. Arnold said. “As an industry leader, Sun Chemical has world-class people and facilities. I look forward to working with the Sun Chemical team to harness our resources and enhancing our position as the industry leader.” Prior to Eastman Chemical, Dr. Arnold was the president of Exatec, a multi-national joint venture between General Electric and Bayer that developed polycarbonate windows for the automotive industry. She had spent the previous five years at General Electric; two years in the U.S. as plastics programs manager/business interface, and three years as director, technology for General Electric Plastics Europe in the Netherlands. Dr. Arnold holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from University of California at Berkeley, and an MBA from Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. She earned a Ph.D in material science and engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
