Sun Chemical Launches Sustainable UV Offset Inks for Printed Plastic Cups

SunCure EcoPlast inks can be washed off printed cups, allowing the plastic substrate to be re-ground, reprocessed and reused.

Sun Chemical has launched SunCure EcoPlast, a press-ready dry UV offset ink range designed for sustainable plastic cup decoration

SunCure EcoPlast is a new UV ink technology for plastic cup decoration that delivers high adhesion, fast cure speed, low migration properties and the ability to be washed off printed cups in post-consumer recycling processes, thereby improving recycled plastic quality.

The inks are designed to be used with automated MX12 dispensing equipment to support on-site blending of spot colors.

At the end of the packaging life cycle, SunCure EcoPlast inks can be washed off printed cups, allowing the plastic substrate to be re-ground, reprocessed and reused for new containers. These inks comply with the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) recyclability guidelines and test protocols for various types of plastics when minimum recommended cure conditions are achieved.

“SunCure EcoPlast is a one-of-a-kind plastic decorating ink technology offering high adhesion, fast cure, low migration food packaging compliance and washability that improves plastic recyclability,” says Jim Bishop, product manager of offset packagingiInks, Sun Chemical. “The unique technical benefits of SunCure EcoPlast inks contribute to an improved circular economy while meeting demand for optimal press performance at the same time.”

SunCure EcoPlast inks are formulated to meet the highest levels of food packaging safety standards, including FDA low-migration protocols for both aqueous and fatty foods.
