Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) announced the completion of the largest solar rooftop system in Northern Europe using REC modules.

The pioneering roof-based system located at the headquarters of Topdanmark, the second largest insurance company of Denmark, was constructed by the Danish company DrivhusEffekten ApS. The installation was connected to the grid at the opening ceremony on August 17, 2012. It has an annual production capacity of 752,000 kWh, corresponding to the average annual power consumption of almost 200 households; 3,042 REC Peak Energy Series modules, supplied by EWS, were used in the installation located in Ballerup, near Copenhagen, Denmark.

At the opening, nearly 130 guests were welcomed by Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the former prime minister of Denmark, who is currently chairman of the Venstre Party and of the Global Green Growth Institute.

“We have done a thorough analysis of advantages and disadvantages of investing in such a large solar system and concluded that the solution is a good investment for us,” stated Christian Sagild, CEO, Topdanmark. The environmental benefit is impressive as the company expects to reduce annual carbon emissions by 600 tons by using the solar power produced locally. As Denmark has one of the highest retail electricity prices in Europe, the system will quickly be profitable.

“We are very pleased that DrivhusEffekten recommended REC modules for this large project,” said Luc Graré, senior vice president sales and marketing, cells and modules, REC Solar. “With retail electricity prices in Denmark higher than the actual cost of solar systems, we see a promising potential for the Danish solar market. Another benefit is net-metering that allows customers to use and get credit for unused electricity thereby reducing their energy bill.”
