Ryan Dehoff, director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been elected a 2024 Fellow for SME. The prestigious honor recognizes Dehoff’s outstanding contributions in materials, processing and energy efficiency in manufacturing.

Dehoff received the award at a ceremony as part of the SME North American Manufacturing Research Conference in Knoxville.

Dehoff began his career at ORNL as a materials scientist, where his contributions at ORNL have significantly advanced manufacturing, especially in metal additive manufacturing, through the development of innovative techniques enhancing the properties, performance and scalability of printed materials.

His research focuses on exploring correlations between process conditions of advanced manufacturing, materials, microstructure and mechanical performance. His expertise extends to various technologies, such as electron beam and laser powder bed, large-scale directed energy deposition and solid-state-based AM processes.

Dehoff has led the MDF since 2022. The MDF, supported by DOE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office, is a nationwide consortium of collaborators working with ORNL to innovate, inspire and catalyze the transformation of US manufacturing.

Dehoff was one of nine fellows from academia, industry and government elected nationwide, and the only fellow representing a DOE national laboratory.
