What makes electronic ID cards secure? How do the complex processes and methods behind the new applications for electronic documents work? These are the central questions which Bundesdruckerei GmbH will be answering at this year’s “CeBIT” (Hall 9, D 80) in Hanover.

Visitors to the booth of Berlin-based Bundesdruckerei will be able to try out the applications possible with the electronic ID card in the fields of eBusiness, eGovernment and eAdministration. Using easy-to-understand examples, the company will also explain the underlying secure transaction processes. The highlights at Bundesdruckerei’s booth this year will be the electronic motor vehicle card, a controllable license plate, ultra-thin displays in ID documents, as well as Bundesdruckerei’s new services as an ID Provider, for instance, for online business.

No long waiting times for vehicle re-registering? No more queuing at the citizens’ office? Electronic forms of ID, such as the European Citizen Card or the electronic ID card, can make this dream come true, at least with some public agencies. At this year’s CeBIT, Bundesdruckerei will demonstrate the possibilities offered by state-of-the-art electronic ID documents and will explain the benefits for citizens.

One example of this is the prototype electronic vehicle re-registration process which Bundesdruckerei has developed within the scope of its “Secure Identity Berlin-Brandenburg” innovation cluster together with Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems: Visitors to the trade fair can see for themselves how a car owner can re-register his car in future via an Internet portal using an electronic ID card and a vehicle card. Bundesdruckerei offers another insight into the future by showing how, following re-registration of the vehicle, the car owner can change the electronic license plate from the comfort of home. This requires a vehicle licence place with a display and a reading device installed in the car.

Another innovative example is the online conclusion of a contract with age verification for car rentals. As a rule, the driver of a rented car must be at least 21 years of age. Using an electronic means of ID, such as the new ID card, it will be possible to furnish proof of age online. The basis for this is the so-called ID Provider, i.e. a trusted authority which confirms for the purpose of Internet business transactions that the data is correct. With its accredited trust center D-TRUST, Bundesdruckerei is such a trusted and long-standing partner.
