Preeminent smart card provider Toppan Forms is turning to U.S.-based Solicore’s proprietary Flexion battery technology to power their products and give them a competitive edge in this fast growing market. Toppan Forms’ Flexion-enabled cards are being exhibited by partner companies at CTST 2008, taking place in Orlando, FL May 12-15. Solicore’s unique Flexion battery technology has enabled suppliers, integrators and distributors to offer some of the world’s most innovative and advanced smart card and RFID applications in a compact platform that can be sized and constructed for any host device. Toppan Forms, the Japanese market leaders in RFID manufacturing and various IC cards, provides complete solutions for authentication employing the innovative electronic paper display units developed by its partners. These novel new technologies have dramatically increased the need for Solicore’s ultra-thin, flexible embedded batteries. “Existing security solutions were too bulky and inconvenient, so we developed our one time password card to fill this gap in the market and to provide enhanced security for applications such as online banking, trading and shopping,” says Yoshio Wachi, general manager of research and development at Toppan Forms. “Solicore’s Flexion batteries, working in conjunction with electronic paper displays, make it possible for us to not only meet customer demand, but to develop newer, thinner more flexible applications in anticipation of their needs.” Toppan Forms’ incorporation of Flexion-enabled display units highlights the increasing global demand for powered smart card and RFID applications. While cost and integration challenges have been industry obstacles in the past, the current widespread adoption of these technologies in Europe and Asia has been profound. The world is progressively embracing smart card applications with the advanced features and security enhancements they provide and Solicore’s Flexion batteries are facilitating this shift. “The international market is extremely fertile, with companies like Toppan Forms rapidly introducing new products and raising the bar for advanced power solutions by demanding thinner, more flexible, higher capacity batteries,” says Solicore CEO David Corey. “We consistently strive to be on the cutting edge of development, providing our Flexion batteries to companies actively transforming the industry through the introduction of next-generation technology. This kind of exposure at a U.S.-based trade show underscores not only the importance of these emerging technologies worldwide, but also showcases how the applications can be deployed in the U.S.”
