INX International Ink Co. announced being one of the first 11 inaugural members to join the New York Environmental Leaders (NYEL) program. Aligned with INX’s commitment to environmental responsibility, NYEL is designed to help businesses sustain their existing high levels of environmental performance and motivate and enable organizations that are committed to reaching higher levels of performance. INX’s facility in Dunkirk, NY played a leading role in becoming the only printing outlet to be involved with NYEL and has an outstanding history in environmental consciousness. In 1996, it became the first ever ink facility in the U.S. to achieve ISO 14001 compliancy status. ISO 14000-level requirements are heavily oriented towards environmental issues, including high standards for waste reduction, water and energy usage. The Dunkirk operation was dual-certified that year, having also earned its ISO 9001 certification. “The Dunkirk facility of INX International has always prided itself with a strong commitment to the environment. Our team has worked diligently with local and state agencies on environmental programs and has continuously looked for innovative ways to promote environmental stewardship,” said Kevin Cochran, INX division Environmental, Health & Safety coordinator and a veteran of the facility’s ISO program. “We are extremely proud to be one of the charter members of the NYEL program and view this as the next step towards environmental leadership within the printing industry.” INX Dunkirk and the other facilities joining NYEL possess strong records of regulatory compliance, a history of performing beyond compliance, and a function system to comprehensively manage their environmental affairs. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which oversees the NYEL program, also requires facilities to implement future projects to improve their environmental performance. In addition to routine regulatory inspections, the agency plans to conduct an on-site visit at each member’s facility to ensure they are meeting NYEL requirements. In addition to INX, the other organizations have committed to collectively reduce their energy and water use, discharge of toxics to water, non-hazardous waste generation, oxides of nitrogen air emissions, and oxides of sulfur. NYEL noted these companies have been reducing their environmental footprint for years and, in some cases, these facilities have been making reductions for decades.
