First consumer product to feature Reflex Electronic Skin

Improv Electronics, makers of Boogie Board eWriters, announced it has launched interactive Skin Flik LCD Color Changing Cases for iPod touch devices. The cases are the first mass-produced consumer product to feature a Reflex LCD Electronic Skin. Reflex skins and Skin Flik cases are manufactured in the U.S., making them highly unique in both the LCD and portable electronics industry. Like Boogie Board eWriters, Skin Flik cases utilize Kent Displays’ revolutionary Reflex flexible LCD technology. While Boogie Board eWriters use Reflex LCDs as their writing surface, Skin Flik cases use Reflex LCDs as an electronic skin that dynamically changes color when the user slides their finger across the bottom of the case. A recent introductory online giveaway of Skin Flik cases generated overwhelming global demand. Dozens of free cases were claimed in under an hour by eager consumers around the world, and responses to the fun and engaging product have been extremely positive. “I am so thrilled that a case like this has been created,” said one giveaway winner. Another described the case as “futuristic and modern” and “stunningly cool.” Kent Displays/Improv Electronics CEO Dr. Albert Green believes Skin Flik cases will have a far-reaching impact similar to Boogie Board eWriters. “The launch of Skin Flik Color Changing Cases is another huge step in our commercialization efforts for Reflex flexible LCDs, as well as establishing the manufacturing base for them in the U.S.,” he said. “Our Boogie Board eWriters have experienced tremendous success worldwide and are having a major impact on society through reduced paper consumption. We expect Skin Flik Cases and other products featuring Reflex LCD Electronics Skins to have a similar societal impact. The color changing capabilities of our electronics skins allow consumers to personalize devices in a dynamic, immediate way that is unachievable with decals, stickers, and static cases. This capability ultimately results in a greatly enhanced, yet simplified product experience that consumers highly desire.” Skin Flik cases are available for the iPod touch 2G and 3G (4G planned) in six different graphic designs – Intensif-i, Multipl-i, Stunna, Shatter, Orbit and Ollie. They are made of durable, impact-resistant plastic – even the LCD – helping protect the iPod touch device. A small amount of power is used to switch colors (supplied by replaceable batteries). No power is required to retain the color.
