After 43 years with Superior Printing Ink, Co., Inc., Harvey R. Brice has retired as managing director of the privately owned lithographic printing ink company. While working for Superior, Mr. Brice was also very active in the graphic arts community, serving NAPIM (National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers) and the printing ink industry with distinction. He has served as an officer and board member of many industry organizations and has been the recipient of many industry awards. Most recently, he was given the “Man of the Year” 2005 award from the Metro New York Printing Ink Association. In the spring of 2006, he was given the “Special AGC Award for Industry Achievement” by the Association of Graphic Communications (AGC). “I consider myself very fortunate to have worked for one company my entire career,” said Mr. Brice. “It’s been a great ride, which allowed me to help the company grow as a member of its management team and president. Now that I’ve retired from active duty, I plan to continue to help Superior in a consulting capacity. I will also remain active in the graphic arts industry.” Mr. Brice began his career with Superior Printing Ink as a trainee in 1962. After building a solid foundation in the technical, sales and management aspects of the business, in 1981 he became chief operating officer of the Superior Printing Ink and Gotham Ink Companies. He became president of Superior Printing Ink in 1989 and served in that position until 2003, when he was promoted to managing director. While responsible for managing the company during a critical period of expansion, Mr. Brice also devoted considerable time to NAPIM, on whose board he continues to serve today. After serving five years on the association’s public relations committee, he became a director in 1980 and was elected treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee in 1985. He served as vice president of the association for two years and in 1991 was elected president. Serving in this position until 1993, Mr. Brice represented NAPIM and delivered major addresses at three General Assemblies of the European Confederation of Paint, Printing Ink and Artist Colours. In 1998, the association honored him with the prestigious Ault Award in recognition of his contributions to the printing ink industry. In other areas of the graphic arts community, Mr. Brice was an active member of the Litho Club of New York, where he served on the speakers’ bureau, and has long been a member of the New York Printing Ink Manufacturers Association, which he served as president from 1981 to 1983. He is an active member of AGC and has been involved with GATF (Graphic Arts Technical Foundation), serving on its board. While a director of ALTRO, an outreach program designed to train young people for vocational careers in various local New York City manufacturing industries, he was instrumental in establishing a printing shop for the organization’s workshop program. In additional activities, Mr. Brice has served as a trustee for Local 447 Union Welfare Annuity & Pension Funds since 1987. He is also a member of the Museum of Modern Art’s Print Associates organization. A resident of New York City, Mr. Brice is a longstanding member of many of the city’s museums, including the Museum of Natural History. “I plan to increase my involvement with some of the museums,” he says. “I am also taking the opportunity to take adult education courses in computers, international policy and whatever else might intrigue me.” Mr. Brice noted of his lengthy career in the industry, “I am very proud of being a part of the graphic arts industry. I have tried to contribute to as many organizations as possible that have enhanced our industry’s growth, prestige and impact.”
