A group of 11 partners across six European nations has launched the GRAPHERGIA project, a 3.5-year research and innovation endeavor aimed at redefining energy solution in everyday life. The project was funded by €4.5 million under the banner of Horizon Europe’s Graphene Flagship initiative. GRAPHERGIA plans to transform energy and usage and storage methods working towards a climate-neutral future.

The goal for GRAPHERGIA is to develop and deploy graphene-based materials into energy harvesting and storage devices to enable scalable and cost-efficient production of 2D material technologies for multiple applications.

“We envision a world where your clothing does more than just look good – it powers your devices, acts as a sensor and connects you seamlessly to the Internet of Things (IoT),” said GRAPHERGIA project coordinator Spyros Yannopoulos.

GRAPHERGIA also aims to explore the development of next-generation electrodes for Li-ion batteries, capitalizing on the unique properties of 2D materials to enhance battery life and performance with an environmentally friendly footprint.

The project was started on November 2-3, 2023 by the following companies: Pleione Gnergy GmbH (Germany), Adamant Composites Ltd (Greece), Université Gustave Eiffel (France), Born GmbH Knitwear for Fashion and Engineering (Germany), Università degli Studi de Roma La Sapienza (Italy), Cosmensus, DOO (Slovenia), Deutsches Zentrum für Luft – Und Raumfahrt EV (Germany), Next Technology Tecnotessile (Italy), AUSTRALO Interinnov Marketing Lab SL (Spain), and Euglottia I.K.E. (Greece).

GRAPHERGIA is under the leadership of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas, bringing together an alliance of ten additional European companies from the industrial and research sectors.
