Minster, OH-based Globus Printing and Packaging is adding a Koenig & Bauer‘s Rapida 105 41-inch six-color UV press, which will be installed in the company’s 160,000-square-foot facility. “As we began to explore new ways to enhance our business, we came to the conclusion that a viable path existed in the form of folding cartons,” said company president Dennis Schmiesing. “Folding carton production became a natural progression for our company for future growth and a tremendous opportunity. This will be our first Koenig & Bauer press but we felt that its leading reputation as a quality manufacturer of presses especially for the packaging and folding carton market made it a preferable selection along with the fact that it provided all of the features we required at a reasonable price.” Operating at top speeds and providing an increased output, the new fully-automated Rapida 105 set for Globus will be replacing two older non-Koenig & Bauer presses – a 40-inch and 29-inch. It will be installed along with the company’s book production capabilities: an existing web press and a new folder producing 30,000 signatures per hour. “We have high expectations for the new Rapida and are convinced we’ll be seeing impressive new levels of efficiency and productivity,” said Schmiesing. “With all of its automation and considerably higher speed, we believe we’ll reduce makeready by half and double our output. We’re responding to our customers’ growing needs and maintaining our strong commitment to continually invest in the best equipment for our business.” What set the Rapida apart in the eyes of Schmiesing was not only its speed and automation but the ability to incorporate UV coating inline and the notable Koenig & Bauer color control system for both its book production and carton manufacturing customers. Due to the extensive substrate range capability of the 29-inch non-Koenig & Bauer press, Schmiesing plans to move book cover production onto the Rapida 105.
