Organic solar cell manufacturer Epishine and capacitor manufacturer Nichicon are joining forces to offer customers integrated power solutions for self-powered devices that simplifies the sustainability of powering methods for low power electronics.

The two companies are striving towards a sustainable solution to eliminate the need for battery replacements. Disposable batteries are the foremost power choice for most sensors and low-power devices. Frequent battery replacements not only contribute to increased environmental impacts but results in higher maintenance costs.

Although light power is one solution it needs to be integrated into the devices. The two companies have found Nichicon’s SLB (Small Lithium-ion Battery) to be a on lower life cycle assessment (LCA), higher efficiency, and simple to integrate battery solution. Eliminating the need for battery replacements, Nichicon’s SLB sustainable in circuit product is made to support energy harvesting for the entire service of life finished goods.

Nichicon’s SLB is a groundbreaking product based on Lithium Titanate Oxide- technology. This battery can capture the smallest level of charging currents and maximizing energy harvesting efficiency at levels below 5uA or 0.01C. The Nichicon SLB also retains more that 80% capacity after 25k charge/discharge cycles, offers rapid charge/discharge specification of 20C, performs at temperatures as low as -30°C, and withstands pules of 100C.

“The combination of Epshine’s indoor solar cell and Nichicon’s SLB represents an important step that allows customers to drive the change towards a sustainable future, without unnecessary battery disposals, At the same time, total cost of ownership can be reduced without battery replacements, while end-user convenience increases due to the elimination of manual charging,” says sales director as Nichicon, Klas Engstroem.

“We are dedicated to finding solutions that strengthen our clients’ ability to make their devices self-powered. Our partnership with Nichicon enables improved cost-efficiency and will simplify the development for groundbreaking self-powered products,” says Hassan Abdalla, product manager at Epishine.
