Fast and secure border control with eGates
March 8, 2014

At Bundesdruckerei’s CeBIT booth visitors can see for themselves just how fast border control clearance at airports will be in the future. That’s because Berlin-based Bundesdruckerei is presenting an eGate and its extended Full ID | Border solution at booth C18 in the Public Sector Parc, Hall 7. Since the beginning of the year, Bundesdruckerei and its partner Secunet Security Networks AG have been equipping German airports with innovative eGates. At this year’s CeBIT, the company will present its extended Full ID | Border solution that features a pre-check procedure, eGates, a smart control and monitoring system which can also be used on tablets, as well as a fingerprint scanner. This one-stop system means easier processes and provides efficient support for border control officers. “Bundesdruckerei is a technological leader when it comes to demanding security solutions. With our Full ID | Border solution, clearance takes only around 18 seconds. This means fast control at the highest security level combined with short waiting times despite constantly growing passenger numbers,” said Ulrich Hamann, CEO of Bundesdruckerei. Visitors to the booth can test the Full ID | Border solution at CeBIT and have a sample electronic passport (ePassport) issued which they can use in the pre-check procedure and to operate the eGate. Another highlight awaits visitors in Bundesdruckerei’s 180° cinema where they can take a flight into tomorrow’s world of airport management. The visitor first places his sample passport on the pre-check reading device. Within a matter of seconds, the integrated document verification system checks whether the travel document is genuine and performs a background query, for instance, in official databases. This pre-check procedure allows border police officers to dynamically adapt control procedures to the latest security situation at all times. This means that during large-scale events, such as football matches, certain passenger groups can be diverted to manned border control desks in a flexible manner. The pre-check system indicates where the passenger is to go – either to manual border control or to an eGate. eGate At CeBIT, visitors will be guided from pre-check to the automatic eGate. To enter the gate, the visitor places his sample passport on an integrated reading device. Once in the eGate, a camera system takes a photo of the visitor’s face. The system now analyses whether the facial image matches the biometric photo stored on the chip of the ePassport. If no irregularities are found, the passenger can leave the eGate and catch his flight. All border control workflows can be centrally controlled by the control and monitoring system. The operating status and workflows of the eGates are displayed at the workplace monitor of the background system. Control rules can also be configured here, both for the pre-check procedure and for the eGates. This makes it easy for border control officers to quickly distribute certain groups of passengers to eGates or manned border control desks. Border control officers will soon be able to use tablets too, so that they can observe and intervene when necessary on site at the eGate.
