Saule Technologies is showcasing its photovoltaic technology based on perovskites at Expo 2020 Dubai. Visitors to the Polish Pavilion in Dubai can charge their phones using solar power from a PV system built into the façade. The Saule Technologies installation consists of 20 vertical linear components with a total area of 2 square meters. Thanks to the ink-jet printing technology, thin and flexible perovskite cells are directly integrated into the exterior wall of the Pavilion, matching its architectural style. The system, with a total nominal power of 200 W, ensure a smartphone charging service using eight USB ports and phone pockets facilitating device storage while charging. Perovskite cells are highly efficient both in natural and artificial light, which makes the charging station useful during the evening hours as well. The charging of a standard phone consumes about 5 W of energy, which means that, given optimum conditions, the system could potentially be used to charge up to 40 devices. Perovskite cells are light, flexible, easy to transport. They come in many colors and shapes. This means that the number of possible applications of perovskite cells is practically unlimited – from roofs or façades of buildings, through the charging of cars, bicycles, mopeds, electronic price tags, to satellites in space. Perovskites are also a perfect energy source for IoT devices. Saule Technologies’ perovskite photovoltaic cells are able to work with 25.5% efficiency in operating conditions for IoT applications (the measurements were carried out under 1000 lux illumination by a cold white LED, which represents the real-life environment for the first commercial application of these devices). Saule Technologies is already implementing its first projects in this area, such as electronic price tags. “Our PV system for phone charging is one of thousands of possible applications of perovskite cells which we selected to show the potential of this technology to visitors and institutions from all over the world. We opened a production line in May, and we are the first company in the world to commercialise perovskite cells. On 24 August, we presented the first brise soleil installation based on perovskites at the premises of our client, the Aliplast company in Lublin, Poland. We are ready to deliver further commercial projects,” said Piotr Krych, CEO at Saule S.A.
