Fraunhofer FEP’s joint project “secureAR,” an open, cloud-based service platform with new AR assistance system equip with OLED microdisplays wins the Technology Award. The award was given at the closing conference of the German Federal Mistry of Education and Research which is funding various interdisciplinary projects.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding interdisciplinary projects to further develop and test business models as part of its “Future of value Creation” research program. The internet-based services focused on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies.

Seven partners from the industry and science worked on the joint project secureAR, the same seven are also working on the development of a cross-industry and open cloud-based service platform with open industry interfaces. This service platform will enable location and situation-based visualization and provision of the data via a novel AR assistance system as well as capture data along the entire value chain.

Fraunhofer EFP contributes decades of experience and expertise in IC design and development of OLED microdisplays for the data glasses developed in the project. It can be integrated into the user’s equipment to offer individual fit adjustment.

The prototype’s hardware can be adapted to different requirements and depending on the intended use, individual components can be removed to reduce the weight and increase comfort. The AR assistance system has been integrated into protective gear that is already used by the project partners, thus there has already been an improvement in ergonomics and increased user acceptance.

Results and services developed through the project can be transferred to small and medium sized enterprises across the industry in the future from the open service platform. The digital platform the digital platform available to all customers and developers due to its open ecosystem design.

The OLED microdisplay components for AR data glasses and systems can be customized and are developed by Fraunhofer and are also available as evaluation kits.
