Emerson announced at the Produce Marketing Association annual trade show the launch of its UltraNFC temperature monitoring label. Provided via the recent acquisition of PakSense, these labels monitor time and temperature of perishable items during transportation and storage, and then transfers this data via short-range near field communications (NFC) to supported Android devices.

“These provide quick and easy data downloads for anyone monitoring the cold chain,” said Frank Landwehr, VP and GM, cargo solutions, Emerson Commercial & Residential Solutions. “We’ve eliminated the need for proprietary readers and cradles and have leveraged Android devices which are widely available in the market.”

Labels sample temperature every minute for highly accurate temperature reads and are encased in a waterproof, plastic pouch. The labels can be placed at the pallet or carton level, or directly on the perishable product. The UltraNFC mobile app can be downloaded via the Google Play Store free of charge.

Emerson recently announced its extension and leadership in cold chain management with the acquisitions of PakSense and Locus Traxx. Already a leader in serving the global container shipping and food retail industries, Emerson has included PakSense and Locus Traxx in a newly formed business focused on cargo-based solutions.

PakSense products provide comprehensive temperature monitoring solutions that help determine the quality and safety of environmentally sensitive goods. The automated and cellular solutions address in-transit, facility monitoring, last mile, and import/exports. Modular in nature, they can be bolted on to each other.
