Azuri will be showcasing its affordable solar phone charging station called Indigo Mobi at Mobile World Congress (MWC). The product is designed to offer a solution to remote communities in sub Saharan Africa, where charging a mobile phone is a major challenge, with the nearest source of electricity often many kilometers away.

Designed for entrepreneurs who wish to offer phone charging as a service, the system enables the entrepreneur to charge more than 100 phones per week without the high up-front costs of traditional equipment. The compact system has been designed to operate on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis similar to Azuri’s award-winning Indigo product, where the entrepreneur pays for the system as a service without the need for high up-front costs.

A successful pilot of Indigo Mobi in Kenya with GVEP yielded an enthusiastic response from participating entrepreneurs, providing phone charging on a local level within a village or community without the need for access to grid electricity. With about half of the units in the trial having been operated by women, Mobi opens up a range of new income opportunities for local groups and access to an “always on” mobile phone increases both individuals’ accessibility and average phone usage.
