CPI, the UK’s national center for printable electronics, is currently involved in four EU-based collaborative projects which include research institutes, SMEs and large multinationals. In addition, CPI is also working on a number of commercial projects with UK-based companies.

Work varies from small scale to 0.5m roll-to-roll production (using ALD and sputter technologies), with total project values accounting to up to over £20m in the next three years, with £2.5m direct support towards CPI.

The initial focus of CPI’s work is to develop clear flexible ultra barriers deposited on polymer substrates; a current “red brick wall” to the development of flexible electronic devices. Various processes will be incorporated into the development, with the aim to move towards full roll-to-roll pilot production. Applications of CPI’s work in barrier and encapsulation will lead to the roll to roll production of flexible devices such as photovoltaics, displays, sensors and solid state lighting.
