There are a number of technology clusters in Europe on printed electronics and a growing number of spin-offs coming out of these clusters. Due to an increased request from customers on a global base, Coatema Coating Machinery GmbH, as one of the leading solution providers for printing, coating and laminating equip-ment decided to form a cooperation with a new spin-out from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

Organic Electronic Technologies (OET) has several skilled Ph.D. members from the university who are specialists in pre-engineering the specifications for production lines, designing devices and processes, in-line metrology tools and training solutions. This means here the first time, Coatema can offer together with OET the whole value chain to write a success story in printed electronics. Start up companies, industrial customers and investors can save a large amount of investments by using the expertise, R2R facilities and the manpower of both companies. Additionally Coatema can offer a variety of other spin-off companies from other European clusters like Printocent to supply R2R pilot production on bigger scale.

This unique network between Germany and Greece will boost European activities in printed electronics and will help also a lot of new companies in this field to survive.

“This shows the strength of the European cluster development, and at the same time, it is great to see this cooperation between a leading German machinery company and a successful Greece start up to get into operation,” said Thomas Kolbusch, vice president of Coatema.

“This strategic cooperation marks the beginning of a new era for both companies by creating an innovation pole in organic electronics and aiming at providing integrated solutions,” Dr. Christos Koidis, general manager, OET, added.
