The vast majority of things are still not connected – a situation SMARTRAC is looking to change. SMARTRAC’s mission is to “connect the unconnected”, and the concept to fulfill that mission was unveiled at the EuroShop trade fair at Düsseldorf. For this purpose, SMARTRAC initiates the evolution towards a smart cosmos, comprising the Internet of Things, comprehensive machine-to-machine and machine-to-object communication, and a wealth of cloud based services.

To drive that evolution, SMARTRAC has established the platform SMART COSMOS, where system integrators, app developers and users of RFID and NFC technologies can participate for their benefit.

By adding a secure link, Tag Identification Credentials and supplementary data as an integral part of its product offering, customers will be enabled to connect objects to the digital world by linking the cloud-based tag credentials to the description of their belongings or company assets. Based on this digital standard, customers and developer communities will have access to a multitude of potential applications for authentication, verification, identification and tracking of goods. Marketers will make use of the platform SMART COSMOS to connect products and customers can create and provide a unique and truly personalized consumer experience.

Being the world’s largest manufacturer of RFID tags, SMARTRAC adds well over one and a half billion data sets per year to this platform, which will become an open standard and the biggest repository of object ID’s worldwide. To facilitate RFID adoption for end users and to give industry partners the chance to choose from various tag suppliers, other RFID companies and market partners are invited to join SMART COSMOS. To make sure tags also comply with current IP regulations, a security certification procedure will be established.

“SMARTRAC is again taking the lead to boost the RFID and NFC ecosystem,” said Clemens Joos, CEO of SMARTRAC. “With SMART COSMOS we are enabling the ability to connect all things to the digital world and make this digital signature available to business partners, customers and consumers, and reaching out far beyond the connectivity of IP addresses. This will be a significant driver for the true empowerment of the Internet of Things.”
