By David Savastano As LOPEC 2014 begins its three-day run at Messe Munich today, conference organizers OEA and Messe Munich have put together a diverse program that offers insights into products that have reached the market, and end users and industry suppliers who can offer their insights into the field of organic and printed electronics. There is also much going on in the world of research, and LOPEC offers a spotlight on these projects through its Scientific Conference and Short Courses, which begin today. The Scientific Conference is broken up into two tracks, both of which begin at 9:30 a.m. The first track includes Sensors and Systems, Encapsulation and Processing, Thin Film Transistors and Analysis and Optimization of PE Technologies. Sensors and Systems begins with “Fully Gravure Printed Carbon Nanotube-based Flexible and Disposable Wireless Cyclic Voltammetry Tag,” by Dr, Younsu Jung of Sunchon National University. Meital Segev-Bar of Technion – Israel Institute of Technology will discuss “Multi-Parametric Flexible Sensors Based on Nanoparticles.” Sebastian Wünscher, Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany, will present on “Chip-on-Foil Devices for DNA Analysis Based on Inkjet Printed Silver Electrodes.” Encapsulation and Processing will feature “High Quality Metallic Grid Preparation on Large Area ITO-Coated Plastic Substrates,” by Dr. Larissa Grinis of Bar-Ilan University; “Time Dependent Permeation of Water Vapor through Multilayer Barrier Films Used for the Encapsulation of Organic Photovoltaic Modules,” presented by Oliver Miesbauer, Fraunhofer-Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung IVV; “Capillary Suspensions – A New Formulation Route for Printable Electronics,” by Monica Schneider, Karlsruhe Institut of Technology; and “Insights on the Blend Morphology and Process Optimization by Optical Metrology for Roll-to-Roll Organic Photovoltaics Applications,” by Dr. A. Laskarakis, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Thin Film Transistors begins with a talk by Gerd Grau, University of California, Berkeley, on “High Performance Printed Organic Transistors Using a Novel Scanned Thermal Annealing Technology.” Dr. Herbert Gold, Joanneum Research, will analyze “Novel High-Performing Photopatternable Dielectrics for Organic Thin-Film-Transistors.” Hyunmo Koo of Sunchon National University will close the session with “Key Control Factor for Mass-Production of Fully Roll-to-Roll (R2R) Gravure Printed Carbon-Nanotube-based Thin Film Transistors.” Track 1 of the Scientific Conference closes with a session on Analysis and Optimization of PE Technologies. “Inkjet Gate Array: Novel Concept to Implement Electronic Systems” will be discussed by Prof. Dr Jordi Carrabina of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. “Semi-Automatic PE Technology and Device Library Characterization for PDK Development” will be covered by Francesc Vila, IMB-CNM (CSIC). “Analysis of Geometric Modeling of Slot Die Lips” will be the topic of a talk by Naoki Rikita, MMC Ryotec Corporation. Track 2 of the Scientific Conference includes the topics of Printing Technologies, Inkjet Printing, Inorganic Materials and Nanomaterials and Processes for OLED Manufacturing Prof. Dr. Pim Groen of Holst Centre – TNO will open the Printing Technologies session with a talk on “Towards Fully Roll-to-Roll Solution Processed Large Area OLED Devices.” Ivo Hamersma, IBS Precision Engineering, will cover “Porous Air Bearing Techniques for Contactless Handling, Flattening and Stabilization of Flexible Substrates.” “Simulation of Doctoring and Inking Processes for Gravure Printing of Silver Micro Patterns on Thin Film” will be presented by Huu Phuong Hoang of Konkuk University, and “Development of Patterning and Printing Technologies for Large Area Functional Films” will be the topic for Dr. Xuechuan Shan of SIMTech, Singapore. Inkjet Printing features “Jetting of Functional Structures on Moulded 3D Devices” by Bernhard Polzinger, HSG-IMAT, head of Group Printing Technology; “UK/Catalan Project DigiPRINT on Large Area High Resolution Digital Printing for Organic Thin Film Transistor Fabrication (Year-1 Update), “ given by Dr. Dimitris Karnakis, Oxford Lasers Ltd.; “Fabrication of Transparent Electrodes by Printing and Self Assembly of Metal Precursors and Nanoparticles,” by Michael Layani, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem; and “Inkjet Printing and Intense Pulsed Light Sintering of Nanoparticle Silver Patterns – Influence of Flashing Parameters and Substrate,” by Dana Weise, Technische Universitaet Chemnitz. Inorganic Materials and Nanomaterials offers presentations on “Silver Nanowire Networks for Foldable Transparent Electrodes” by Dr. Xinning Ho, Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology; “Copper Precursors for Flexible and Plastic Electronics” by Prof. Shlomo Magdassi of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem; “Selective Sintering of Inkjet-Printed Metal Nanoparticles onto Polyethylene Terephthalate Substrate,” presented by Dr. Daniel Zymeika of Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne; and “Transparent Metal Oxide Thin Film with High Thermal Stability, Hardness and Chemical,” presented by Prof. Dr Hsueh-Shih Chen of National Tsing Hua University. Track 2 concludes with the topic of Processes for OLED Manufacturing. The session will open with “Solution Processing of Self-Assembled Monolayers in Printing Relevant Timescales,” by Milan Alt, Merck KGaA/Karlsruher Institut für Technologie. “OLED on Flexible Glass from Sheet-to-Sheet to Roll-to-Roll Fabrication” will be the topic of the presentation by Dr. Stefan Mogck, Fraunhofer COMEDD. “Inkjet-Printed Diodes Based on Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor (MIS) Structure for Rectifying Application in Flexible Electronics” will be presented by Kalyan Yoti Mitra, Technische Universitaet Chemnitz, and the track will close with “Large-Area, Fexible, ITO-free Organic Light Emitting Diodes Fabricated on Fabric-based Electrodes” by Dr. Oscar Fernandez of CSEM. LOPEC also offers four short courses today, beginning at 9:30 with “Materials for Organic and Printed Electronics,” presented by Prof. Ullrich Scherf of the Macromolecular Chemistry group and Institute for Polymer Technology, Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Macromolecular Chemistry group and Institute for Polymer Technology. Prof. Ronald Österbacka, Åbo Akademi, Turku, Professor of Physics, Chair of Center for Functional Materials, will follow with “Solution Processable Organic Electronic Devices” at 11:30 a.m. At 2 p.m., Tim Claypole Swansea University, will discuss “Manufacturing Methods and Challenges for Printing Electronics.” The short courses will close with “Hybrid Systems: Stretching the Limits of Electronics,” by M. Marc Koetse, Integration Technologies for Flexible Systems, Holst Centre, which starts at 4 p.m.
