Universal Display Corporation announced that Mauro Premutico, previously managing vice president and chief patent counsel at The Walt Disney Company, has joined the company as vice president, legal and general manager, patents and licensing. Premutico brings decades of experience in patent protection, intellectual property law, and licensing to Universal Display.

“We are delighted to have Mauro join our management team as we continue to build our company as the leading OLED technology developer and material supplier to the display and lighting industries,” said Steven V. Abramson, president and CEO of Universal Display. “Mauro will lead our strategic initiatives to manage, defend, and further enhance our intellectual property. With his years of international experience in patent enforcement and defense as well as license negotiations, Mauro will play a key role as we move into the next phase of growth for our customers and shareholders.”

While at The Walt Disney Company, Premutico managed the patent legal and corporate technology licensing teams for all Disney companies, served as lead negotiator on all significant patent and technology licensing matters and developed teams that monetized Disney’s patent assets.

Before Disney, Premutico worked as vice president, intellectual property law and licensing and assistant general counsel at Lenovo Group Holdings, where he helped build and oversaw its patent portfolio management and licensing teams in the U.S., China and Japan. Before serving as special counsel at the law firm of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in New York, NY, where he was co-head of the intellectual property and technology practice, Premutico served as vice president, intellectual property and assistant general counsel at Symbol Technologies, where his responsibilities included enforcement of its patents and negotiating key technology transactions.

Premutico’s experience and expertise will help him succeed in managing Universal Display’s patent portfolio, which is one of the largest in the OLED field and includes licensing rights to over 1,400 issued and pending patents worldwide in a broad array of OLED technologies, materials, and processes. Universal Display has entered into more than 30 business agreements with leading manufacturers in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, Europe and the U.S.

NovaCentrix Chief Scientist Dr. Kurt Schroder Named 2012 Inventor of the Year

Texas State Bar honors Dr. Schroder

NovaCentrix announced that Chief Scientist Dr. Kurt Schroder has been named 2012 Inventor of the Year by the Texas State Bar. Dr. Schroder received the prestigious award based on the range and depth of his body of patents in their economic impact to Texas as well as on the judging panel’s assessment of their value to society.

His work includes ergonomic grip improvements to hand tools and sporting equipment, numerous innovations in nanotechnology materials and applications, and most recently the development of the photonic curing process enabling advanced printed electronics. His work has collectively resulted in nearly half a billion dollars in revenue and the creation of numerous jobs.

“We’re tremendously honored to have Dr. Schroder on our team at NovaCentrix,” said CEO Charles Munson. “His creativity and real-world technical insights are exceptional.”

“I appreciate the recognition from the Texas State Bar,” said Dr. Schroder. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to my colleagues at NovaCentrix for working with me in converting these concepts into practical and economical products, addressing real problems.” Dr. Schroder is one of the earliest members of the initial company, having joined in 2000.

Photonic curing utilizes proprietary flash lamps for processing high-temperature materials on low-temperature substrates, and is ideal for drying, sintering, annealing, and reacting functional materials of interest in the emerging printed electronics industry. NovaCentrix has commercialized photonic curing into the state-of-the-art PulseForge tools. Unlike traditional oven technologies, PulseForge tools selectively heat thin films to very high temperatures using microsecond-scale flash lamp pulses without damaging low temperature substrates, such as polymers and paper.

By adjusting the pulse attributes via touch-screen interface, temperature profiles in the film and substrate can be closely controlled and optimized to achieve high-performance properties at high-speed roll-to-roll processing rates. These capabilities are critical for customers developing new applications in photovoltaics, RFID, displays, sensors, and batteries. Dr. Schroder’s efforts have resulted in issued patents on photonic curing in the US, Canada, and China to date with numerous patents pending worldwide including in the EU and Japan.
