The High Value Manufacturing Catapult has announced the appointment of Dick Elsy as its first full time chief executive officer.

Set to take up the position from Oct. 1, 2012, Elsy is the holder of a silver medal from the Royal Academy of Engineering for his outstanding contribution to British engineering. He is also a chartered engineer, a fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and a former director and trustee of Engineering UK.

He joins the catapult from his previous role as chief executive for gearless traction drive technology manufacturer, Torotrak.

“Innovation, and our catapult centers in particular, are central to our plans for sustainable economic growth and our emerging industrial strategy,” noted business secretary Vince Cable. “Catapults are key in making sure that we are building the groundwork for a bright future, and giving businesses the confidence to develop and market new and innovative products and technologies.

“Dick Elsy has an excellent track record and exactly the sort of experience and skills in business, design and engineering which our catapult centers need.”
