Slovakia has commissioned Bundesdruckerei GmbH to produce ID documents. On behalf of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic, the company will supply over the next four years around 3 million ID cards and 1.6 million driving licenses according to the new EU standard. The documents will be produced in credit-card format (ID1 format); they are made of polycarbonate and can be personalised using laser-engraving equipment.

“Bundesdruckerei’s high-security ID systems and documents are in demand world-wide, and in recent months alone, we have won projects in Luxembourg, Latvia and Lithuania. This new contract is an excellent endorsement for Bundesdruckerei also with a view to the EU’s enlargement to the east and south,” said Ulrich Hamann, CEO of Bundesdruckerei.

For many years, Bundesdruckerei GmbH has been the leading producer of ID and eID documents which are extensively protected against forgery or manipulation. Electronic eID documents are becoming increasingly important on the international stage. Slovakia is also preparing for this development and the card bodies of the country’s ID cards have been designed from the very beginning to feature an electronic chip in a second stage.
