With an eye on training and working overseas from his native Colombia, Harold Osorio joined the ink industry in 1995. It is clear the 2020 Pioneer Award honoree made the right choice.
“I was hired by Sinclair in Colombia (a Coates Lorilleux operation) as a chemical analyst for the R&D lab,” Osorio recalled. “Early on, it was the opportunities to receive training and work abroad. Over time, formulating inks and coatings to meet the demands of the ever-changing flexible packaging market (high-speed presses, high-opacity/high-density / high-chemical resistance and mechanical abuse requirements) became a key focus and priority, and more recently, leading the development of ink technology to enable recyclability of post-consumer PET bottles and plastic films.”
Just before moving to the US, Osorio joined Sun Chemical, assuming roles of increasing responsibility. Currently, he has established himself as an expert in many technology areas, leading or supporting with global scope, including Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe.
Among his many achievements, Osorio is credited with developing High Color Strength and High Speed inks, and designed some of the earliest formulations of High Resistance/High Abuse surface printed inks for the most demanding food packaging applications. Most recently, he has been a leader in the advancement of sustainable printing inks, and is an expert in the shrink sleeve label market. He also holds multiple provisional patents.
“The industry has evolved to adapt and meet the constant changes and demands of the market, from high speed presses or the latest engraving technology for plates or cylinders, to environmental and health regulations, or digitalization and automation of the industry to the sustainable, bio-renewable and recycle-friendly demands of today’s world,” he noted.
Osorio points to a number of important influences on his career, beginning with his faith and his parents.
“My key and constant influence has been my faith in Christ,” Osorio noted. “Then my parents, who modeled a role for ethics, hard work and a passion for learning and self-improvement that still drives what I do today. And over the years I’ve had great mentors, supervisors, friends, team members and colleagues that have influenced in many ways the results I get credit for.”
Outside of work, Osorio enjoys running, biking and spending quality time with his family.
Osorio said he is deeply grateful for the Pioneer Award.
“I never thought that it would be for someone like me, therefore I feel deeply and humbly honored having received such a prestigious award,” he said.
