Braintree Printing (Braintree, MA) began as a retail quick printer in 1982. The company has retained the same management and ownership in the nearly four decades since.
“About 20 years ago, we decided to become trade printers,” said Jim Corliss, owner and co-founder of Braintree Printing. “Now about 90% of what we produce is being resold by other printers and print brokers.”
Braintree Printing services the trade in New Jersey, New York and New England. “We have defined our marketing area by shipping,” said Corliss, a US Army veteran and Milton, MA resident. “All those areas are a one day ship – at ground rates – from our location.”
The company runs two Xerox iGen 150 presses – according to Corliss, it produces more than 2 million digital pages per month – as well as some Ryobi 23”x29” five color presses.
“The combination of strong digital and strong offset along with our robust bindery allows us to meet the needs of our trade customers,” Corliss said. “We depend on iGen’s built-in automation technologies to minimize guesswork and maximize productivity.”
When it comes to buying offset ink, Braintree looks for vendors who sell an ink that runs well and has consistent quality, the owner said. “For any offset job, the cost of ink is a small percentage of the cost of the job,” he added. “So, for offset ink, price is a secondary consideration. Consistency, ‘runability’ and availability are more important.”
Corliss spotlighted his employees.
“In every position in the company we have what we think of as superstars,” he said.
Braintree’s iGen operator was school trained by Xerox and was the first Xerox-certified iGen operator in New England, Corliss noted. The folder operator has been running folders for more than 30 years and is, per Corliss, “simply the best in the business.”
Braintree Printing ranked No. 32 on Printing News’ 2018 Top 100 Quick & Small Commercial Printers list.
The company was founded by Corliss and Jerry Hogan, Braintree’s former president who retired Dec. 31, 2015, but still serves in an advisory role. Jose Taffer joined in 1983 and is a co-owner.
According to its website, the company’s mission is “to provide you with the highest-quality products and services possible in a timely fashion and at a competitive price. We promise to listen to you and help you achieve your business goals. We will always be there with honest, expert advice and quick, friendly customer service.”
