Comments: FUJIFILM has made major inroads in the digital field, from developing state-of-the-art presses and workflow solutions to ink consumables. The company has two divisions, FUJIFILM Imaging Colorants (FFIC) and FUJIFILM North America, Graphics Systems Division, that provide a complete digital solution to its customers, and the company continues to enjoy growth in all aspects of the inkjet market.
Fujifilm Imaging Colorants found particularly strong success in the industrial segment, with aqueous pigmented inkjet ink exhibiting the highest growth across the various industrial segments.
“Overall 2013 was a strong year for FFIC, and while we experienced some slow down in our more mature businesses, the demand from new market segments continued to gather pace,” said Brian Meldrum, president, FFIC. “We also realigned the organization’s activities across Europe and North America to become even more responsive to customer needs and changing market trends.
“We saw recovery in Japan and the U.S., continued weakness in Europe, slower growth in emerging markets, and economic structural reform in China continues to offer exciting opportunities for this region,” Meldrum added.
Fujifilm Imaging Colorants is investing in R&D, adding its new Ink Technology Center in Delaware in 2013.
Meanwhile, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division has begun a significant renovation at its Technology Center in Hanover Park, IL.
“Construction is underway to more than double the size of the current Technology Center, with the new space expanding to encompass over 20,000 square feet to display everything from traditional offset printing to the latest technologies in flexography, wide format and production inkjet solutions,” said Terry Amerine, business development manager, Specialty Media & Equipment, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division.
Adding to an its line-up of UV inkjet presses, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division, along with UK-based FFEI Ltd., have released Graphium, a new high speed UV inkjet press with a 16” print width targeted at converters and printers producing labels, packaging and specialty print applications.
“Graphium is a modular UV inkjet press that allows for both flexographic print stations and inline finishing options,” Amerine said. “This provides a level of flexibility and productivity to print the complex projects that customers increasingly require in today’s market. The inline corona treatment enables customers to print on virtually any substrate without the requirement of a coating to achieve adhesion.”
Utilizing greyscale printheads that produce a range of drop sizes from six to 42 picoliters combined with inter-color LED pinning of the ink enables Graphium to print fine details, smooth tones and small font text demanded by exacting customers at single-pass print speeds up to 164 ft./min.
Graphium utilizes Fujifilm’s Uvijet inks in a color set including Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black together with a high opacity white. Uvijet inks provide a wide color gamut, excellent adhesion and durability on a wide range of substrates, including most grades of top-coated PE, top-coated PP, PVC and paper.
