With the announcement early last year that Miwon North America is opening its new manufacturing plant in Columbia, SC in 2021, the company will have manufacturing capabilities globally. The initial plant will be built on 15 acres, with the potential to expand immediately if needed.
Robert O’Toole, EVP of Miwon North America, Miwon Specialty Chemical’s North American subsidiary, discussed the progress on the facility,
“We anticipate the startup will be early to mid-2021, and will bring 25 jobs to the region immediately,” said O’Toole. “We have multiple plants in Korea, a plant in Spain, and this completes our global asset deployment in the Western Hemisphere. The most intriguing point is that we will have the largest manufacturing capacity in the world for crosslinking acrylates, specialty acrylates and methacrylates.
O’Toole said that having a regional manufacturing base provides a lot of opportunities that Miwon did not have before.
“The new plant gives up the opportunity to optimize the specialty nature of our business,” O’Toole said. “Miwon did not start taking on a global presence until a decade ago, and now we are backing it up with all of these assets. We have a true global presence now.
“We have a strong position in a lot of high-end markets because of our consistency and high quality,” he added. “Our business is strong, with middle single-digit growth in aggregate. I feel our quality is the best in the industry. We were first to market with toluene- and HAP-free products, so we meet the needs of select markets in printing inks. We have captive EO/PO capability. We have these existing capabilities and can support markets in real time.”
